What Is The Trans Flag?
The transgender flag or transgender pride flag is a flag that represents the transgender community, transgender organizations and transgender individuals. It forms one of the many identity-specific flags used in the LGBT community and represents transgender pride. The flag is actually flown by certain UK councils during the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Helm's Trans Flag Design
Probably the most notable transgender flag design is that of Monica Helms, the flag is better known as the "Transgender Pride Flag" and is seen as the mother to all trans flags proceeding it. It is the first trans flag to be recognized and is the most widely used of the transgender flags. Helm's original Transgender Pride Flag can actually be found in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The flag has been adapted from time-to-time to incorporate more localized elements for smaller trans communities.
Israeli Trans Flag Design
In terms of gender based specifications and equalities, it's safe to say that Israel is on the more conservative side to say the least. To make a loud statement during protests, the Israeli Trans Flag had to be something different. We think they managed to achieve this with its bright green background and centered Venus, Mars and Mars symbol with a stroke through, to represent the transgender community.
Lindsay Trans Flag Design
This trans flag was designed by a Canadian, Michelle Lindsay. Lindsay is a graphic designer by trade, which you can definitely see through the crispness of the Lindsay Trans Flag's design. The flag itself consists of two repeating stripes. The first stripe is done in Sunset Magenta and is said to represent the female. The second stripe is that of an Ocean Blue coloured stripe, said to represent the male. Overlaying these stripes is a tripled Venus, Mars and Mars symbol with a stroke through, to represent the transgender community. The Ottawa Police Force actually raises this trans flag on Trans Day of Remembrance.
Andrew Trans Flag Design
The Andrew trans flag was designed by Johnathan Andrew, a transgender man. Andrew's designed and published the flag for use within the transgender community. The design of the flag features several alternating light pink and light blue stripes, separated by thin white lines. The flag features a magenta Venus and Mars symbol in the top-left corner. There has been some criticism surround the similarities in design to that of Helm's transgender flag design, but these have been widely debunked as access to information was not what is now and both flags do what they're meant to, unite the transgender community and raise awareness.
Kaleidoscope Trans Flag Design
The transgender flag known as the "Kaleidoscope" was designed and published by the TTA (Toronto Trans Alliance) in Toronto. The flag was voted in as the official transgender flag in Toronto by the TTA, over the two most widely used flag designs of Helm's and Lindsay's designs. This came with some resistance as the trans community in Toronto were not to happy about being represented by an unknown flag. The flag was only used once in 2014 in the Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony in Toronto. The design itself included a multitude of colours: pink (women), purple (those who feel their gender identity is a combination of male and female), green (those who feel their gender identity is neither male nor female), blue (men) and yellow (intersex).
